Belize unveils its Maya 2012 Celendar

On Wednesday, January, 11th the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) alongside the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) launched the Maya 2012 Calender of Events. The event was held at the Bliss Center for Performing Arts in Belize City.
The opening entertainment definitely set the mood for the event. The harmonious melodies of Maya music filled the air from an amazing flutist, Pablo Collado who certainly kept a captive audience not only with his melodies, but also with his talented handiwork on the flute.
The Otaxa Deer Dancers certainly entertained the attendees with the traditional Mayan Deer Dance. They were accompanied by marimba music and the flute. The Maya Deer Dance symbolizes the important relationships between humanity and nature and was evident in the variety of masks worn by the dancers. Some of the dancers wore masks of the faces of men and women, and others wore masks with the faces of the deer, jaguar, monkey among others. All the dancers wore clothing that was very colorfully adorned.
After the opening entertainment, Pablo Collado once again played a beautiful rendition of the Belize National Anthem on his flute and was followed by a prayer by Reverend Canon Leroy Flowers.
Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, Hon. Manuel Heredia gave the welcome address and invited everyone to enjoy the night's festivities. Minister Heredia's keynote was that Belize is the Heartland of the Maya.
Hon. Manuel Heredia was followed by none other than Dr. Jaime Awe, who is Belize's Director at the Institute of Archaeology. Dr. Awe has been in the field of archaeology for over 30 years. Dr. Jaime Awe has been one of Belize's pioneering and most prominent archaeologists and has worked on many of Belize's major excavations. Dr. Jaime Awe, however, did not want to take away any accolades from the guest of the evening, Dr. Mark Van Stone who was yet to present his topic of the evening. "What The Mayas Actually Said About 2012".
Then came time for the unveiling of the calendar of events for the Maya 2012 Calendar. I must admit that the calendar is filled with many events covering various parts of the country and numerous activities. There are great events scheduled for each month of the year 2012. President of NICH and Chairperson of the 2012 Committee, Ms. Diane C. Haylock, definitely stressed the importance of this years activities for 2012 and the goals they are trying to achieve by having such activities. Ms. Diane Haylock made mention again of Belize being the Heartland of the Maya. Belize is unique among its neighbors of the Mundo Maya because here, a visitor can easily experience several of the Maya sites in one day as the distances between sites are relatively small and there is a high concentration of Maya sites within Belizen borders. In most countries of the Mundo Maya, the archaeological sites are separated by long distances.  Then came time for Ms. Diane Haylock to unveil the Maya 2012 Passport. A phenomenal deal is being offered where for the price of visiting two Maya ruins you get an opportunity to visit ten different Maya sites. You can get your 2012 Maya Passport stamped as you visit the different sites around Belize.
The Belize Tourism Board then officially launched its website for this year Maya 2012. You can see the website here:  http://belizemaya2012.com. The website is very informative so feel free to take a look.

Before the lecture began the attendees were treated to mouth watering Maya dishes including, corn panades, tamales, chicken cooked in 'col' which is a richly spiced tomato and corn based sauce, and dukunu as well as a delicious array of fresh vegetables and tropical fruits. The Otaxa Deer Dancers took to the stage entertaining the audience as they flowed into the Center for Performing Arts Auditorium for the lecture by Dr. Mark Van Stone.
Dr Jaime Awe then introduced the guest speaker for the evening, Dr. Mark Van Stone who was to present, "What The Ancient Maya Actually Said About 2012".  Dr. Mark Van Stone is a Maya expert specializing in Maya Hieroglyphs and calligraphy. Van Stone’s books include “2012: Science and Prophecy of the Ancient Maya” inspired by Maya inscriptions, astronomical knowledge, math, and myth, and “Reading the Maya Glyphs”. Responding to the recent upsurge in interest in “the Maya prophecies”, Prof. Mark Van Stone has spent the last several years researching what the Ancient Maya actually said about 2012.
Dr. Van Stone made sure to mention that nowhere in the history of the Maya is a doomsday prophecy emphasized, but they did, in fact, mention of a renewal period and a change in the Maya Calendar from a short period calendar to a long period calendar. There is also evidence from the the Maya history found on stellaes, that life and history actually continue to 4772 A.D. as can be seen below in the photo. He believes that the Sosltices were not as important to the Maya as we believe they were. He also made mention that with only 1% of the Maya civilization being unearthed that there is not much data and still so much more that we need to learn about the mystical and ancient civilization of the Maya. Dr. Mark Van Stone said that whatever data have been unearthed are contradictory since the Maya did not believe in correcting errors. The Maya did not change errors because they saw it as a sign from the gods that it was meant to be so. Maya scholars also disagree on the information that has been found and their interpretations.

The Maya 2012 Calender of events is shown below:

One of the very special events taking place this year on the calender is a very new and unique concept in Belize. The date 12-12-12 offers a great opportunity for 36 lucky couples, who are interested in being a part of the mysticism of the Maya, to get married or renew their vows on the ancient Maya Ruin of Cahal Pech in the Cayo District of Belize. This once in a lifetime event is being spearheaded by Lara Goldman of Romantic Travel Belize. For more information visit 2012 Maya Weddings.

The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) announces a new interactive culinary website geared towards providing travelers with a comprehensive guide on Belize's unique cuisine and restaurants located throughout the country. Cleverly named SavorBelize, this website unveils a treasure of tastes, events, traditions and specialty styles dictated by Belize's more than 10 diverse cultures, including Mestizo, Creole, Garifuna, East Indian, Maya and more. Totaling the size of Massachusetts, Belize is the only Central American country to house so many cultures within mere hours of each other, allowing tourists to experience the distinct richness of various communities through authentic fare.

"From foodie fanatics to leisure travelers, authentic food is simply another way that people like to travel. They like to try unique, local meals, and experience culture through indigenous cuisine," said Seleni Matus, director of tourism for the BTB. "Many tourists don't know where to eat or what dishes to try while traveling in Belize, so we created SavorBelize to be their go-to resource."

SavorBelize is accessible through Belize's official travel website, TravelBelize.org, and features information on any and everything related to Belizean cuisine. Highlights include restaurant listings for the entire country; blog reviews of restaurants by international culinary writers; photos and more. And as SavorBelize is designed to be a tourist-oriented interactive website, travelers can post their own photos, videos and reviews of their culinary adventures online. To be unveiled in late 2011, an interactive map will allow travelers to research restaurants in their vacationing area and map out their culinary route in advance of their trip.

People who have not yet visited the country can bring a piece of Belize into their own kitchen, as local chefs have come together to share their food and drink recipes on SavorBelize. And for those intrigued by the "farm to table" concept, or simply seeking a behind-the-scenes peek at Belize's unique culinary offerings, SavorBelize provides an overview of various food tours offered throughout the country, including chocolate-making tours, trips to the Belikin Beer factory (Belize's official beer) and Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce factory, to name a few.

Belize Kicks Off Maya 2012 Celebrations with New Museum Exhibit

Belize City, Belize – May, 2011
(Press Release)

As the official kick-off for Maya 2012 celebrations in Belize, the Belizean community is embracing a new worldly era by reflecting on the past at the Museum of Belize in Belize City. Providing a deeply enchanting and personal look at the Mayas’ work in creating famous Belizean jade masterpieces, “The People Who Carved Jades and Their Descendants” is an exhibit that was revealed in April in order to provide visitors with a deeper connection with Belize’s Maya culture, as people look to uncover the truth about the end of the 2012 calendar.

As the first of many celebrations planned for when the world starts anew on December 21, 2012, this exhibit serves as a bridge between ancient times and the future, and sets the tone for a full line-up of Maya-related events, tours, activities and festivals in Belize, scheduled throughout 2011 and 2012.

“Jade signified life to the Mayas, and we are proud to commence our countdown to the world’s rebirth in conjunction with this renowned exhibit,” said Seleni Matus, director of tourism for the Belize Tourism Board (BTB). “The Long Count Calendar fascinates people from all over the world, and we look forward to unveiling the calendar’s true meaning and the Mayas’ mysteries to all visiting scientists, academics and visitors.”

“The People Who Carved Jades and Their Descendants,” which is sponsored by National Institute of Culture and History (NICH) in conjunction with United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), builds on and personalizes the already successful “Jades of Belize” exhibit by highlighting the Mayas who crafted extraordinary jade objects thousands of years ago.

As the epicenter of Maya culture during the Classic Period, Belize has retained its vibrant Maya community and strong influence throughout time, along with an array of ancient Maya temples, artifacts and more. Information on all of Belize’s most notable Maya sites can be found on the country’s official travel website, but examples include Altun Ha, which is just north of Belize City and is where the largest carved jade object in the entire Maya area – a Jade Head – was originally discovered. Lubaantun in Punta Gorda is a site rumored to be the place where Anna Mitchell-Hedges found the famous Crystal Skull, in 1926. And temples at Lamanai in northern Belize were occupied continuously for over 3,000 years, and are surrounded by a lush and beautiful jungle.

Highlights of upcoming Maya 2012 celebrations planned for 2011 include the 5th Annual Toledo Cacao Festival (scheduled from May 20-22), which celebrates the growth of Belize’s cacao industry since Mayas first discovered chocolate in 1000 B.C., while also showcasing the various ways that the Maya utilized the cacao bean, including ceremonial purposes, food and beverage. In June, Belize will hold the Lamanai Challenge, a triathlon featuring running, cycling, and canoeing, in which participates finish by way of canoe at the New River Lagoon at the Lamanai Archaeological Reserve.

La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge 2011

The La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge is a grueling multi-day canoe race traveling down the Old Belize River. Starting from the historic Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio, Cayo District to the Belcan Bridge in Belize City. The route runs West to East along the Macal and Belize Rivers which was once a historic route and vital link between San Ignacio, in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, and the bustling port of Belize City. This is a race for everyone (not just professional racers)!

Conceptualised by Richard Harrison of Big-H Enterprises for the purpose of launching Vida brand purified water, La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge made its debut on March 9, 1998 with great support from many Belizean corporations and organizations such as The Belize Tourism Board , The Lodge at Chaa Creek resort, and the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. It was seen as an opportunity to bring many partners with similar interests together to build an event that could allow for promotional themes of 'natural products' identified with sports, endurance, nutrition, and well being. The underlying concept is one of a team of businesses and organisations interested in the environment/ecology, history/culture and the tourism potential which the Belize Old River offers as one of the great natural resources of Belize.

There are 8 divisions for the race:
  1. Male
  2. Female
  3. Mixed
  4. Masters
  5. Dory
  6. Intramural
  7. Pleasure craft
  8. Family Adventure Race

There are three night stops as the race progresses: Banana Bank on the first night, Double Head Cabbage on the second night, and Burrel Boom on the third night. The first canoes enter into Belize City to cheering crowds at about 10:00 am on the last day.

The La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge Race coincides with the Baron Bliss Day Celebrations in honor of Belize's great benefactor Henry Victor Edward Bliss, who left a significant will to the people of Belize. The race occurs each year in March. This year (2011), the canoes left San Ignacio on March 4 and will arrive in Belize City on March 7. The teams, which race for station prizes along the way, battle for the major cash prizes awarded at the end of the race.
